01 In short

How do I turn a floor plan into a SketchUp model?

Upload the floor plan image to IDstudio and approve the furnished layout. It builds the home in 3D and gives you a SketchUp .skp file with a scene for each view, with no tracing, then renders every room from that model and makes the client design book.

02 A real project

A real project: Japandi 2-room Flexi by Eunice, Ling's Haus

Eunice drew her layout on the HDB floor plan. IDstudio built it as she drew it, made the 3D model and rendered every room, then rebuilt it with her corrections.

03 What you get

What is in the SketchUp file?

The home as drawn on the plan, furnished to the approved layout, with each view saved as a scene. Open it in SketchUp and keep working.

  • Walls, doors and windows: read from the plan image, with its printed dimensions, before anything is drawn.
  • The approved layout: your own layout built as you drew it, or the one IDstudio proposed and you approved.
  • Built elements: the theme's doors, joinery, feature walls and ceiling are modelled in 3D, not painted onto the renders.
  • A scene per view: the Ang Mo Kio 4-room sample has 13 scenes: 12 room views and an overview.
  • Matching renders: each photoreal render is made from its clay view of the same model and camera, so the renders match the file.

Download the sample SketchUp file (.skp, 535 KB) from the Ang Mo Kio 4-room HDB sample.

04 How it works

From plan image to .skp in three steps

  1. 01

    Upload the plan and brief

An image or PDF of the floor plan is enough: the HDB sales plan, or a plan with your own layout drawn on it. IDstudio reads the walls, doors, windows and dimensions, and asks when something is unclear.

  2. 02

    Approve the furnished plan

You get a dimensioned furnished plan. Ask for changes in plain words, a sketch or a mark-up, then approve.

  3. 03

Get the model and the renders

The approved plan is built in 3D as a SketchUp model with clay views to check, then every room is rendered from its clay view.

07 Questions

Floor plan to SketchUp: questions

Can AI create a SketchUp model from a floor plan?

Yes. IDstudio reads a floor plan image, drafts the furnished layout and, once you approve it, builds the home in 3D and gives you a SketchUp .skp file with a scene for each view. You can download the sample .skp from the Ang Mo Kio 4-room HDB sample.

Can I convert a PDF or hand-drawn floor plan to SketchUp?

Yes. Upload the floor plan as an image or a PDF, such as the HDB sales plan or a plan with your layout drawn on it, as in the Ling's Haus case study. IDstudio reads it and builds the SketchUp model from it.

Is the SketchUp model editable?

Yes. It is a normal SketchUp .skp file. Open it in SketchUp and keep working: move furniture, change joinery or add detail once the client is interested.

Do I need SketchUp to use IDstudio?

No. IDstudio builds the model and renders it for you, with no separate rendering or SketchUp subscription to manage. You only need your own copy of SketchUp if you want to keep editing the .skp yourself.

How long does it take?

In five steps and less than an hour. When left to run through all five steps on its own, without stopping for your review. You approve the furnished plan, the 3D model, the renders, the photo style and the design book, and each stage waits for you.

How much does it cost?

US$99 (S$129) a month at the launch price, down from US$149, for 6 projects and an estimated 100 renders, cancel anytime. The 7-day free trial is one full project with no card: floor plan to furnished layout, 3D model and SketchUp file, and up to 4 renders (trial credits worth US$50). Start the free trial.
